The Witching Hour

Happy Halloween! As per usual things have been hectic over the past few week mainly due to an indecisive mortgage company continuing to screw with my life. I keep on asking myself if it really worth all the hassle. Anyways, enough negativity, it is Halloween today. Halloween is especially great because it gives you an excuse to watch a few horror films, not that I need an excuse any other time of the year.

Over the course of today I have managed to watch Maniac (1980), Halloween (1979) and The Thing from Another World (1951). In the lead up to Halloween, obviously you need to build up to such an important day, I managed to subject my girlfriend to The Exorcist (1973) and my favourite film of all time Profondo Rosso (1975). I freely admit that I get some kind of sick pleasure from scaring people with films, I used to do it to my A-Level students whenever the chance presented itself. I don’t think that any of them will forget the opening 10 minutes of the original When a Stranger Calls (1979) for the rest of their lives. That is the great thing about true horror cinema, there is really nothing better than a good scare. I have probably spent the majority of my life looking for films that could genuinely scare me. So far Ghostwatch (1992) has only been the one to continuously unnerve me. It is quite sad that the majority of horror cinema is now completely devoted to grossing out the audience with over-the-top gore.

So there we are, as I write this we have just entered the Witching Hour and Halloween is all but over. Did anyone else get round to watching some great horror films this evening?
